What Is Life Story Direct Work (LSDW) - PPF Model?
Life Story PPF—short for Life Story Past, Present, Future—is a unique model of Life Story Direct Work developed by expert Life Story therapists at The Behaviour Clinic. Built from their extensive experience working with thousands of care experienced children and young people, this model was created specifically for social workers and social care practitioners to use as a practical, certified direct work approach.
The Behaviour Clinic developed Life Story PPF after years of practice revealed that many children referred for therapeutic Life Story Work didn’t necessarily need therapy; they simply needed structured Life Story support. This insight led to Life Story PPF, designed to empower social workers and practitioners to deliver impactful Life Story Direct Work.

Why train in Life Story Direct Work?
The need for effective Life Story Work is increasingly being recognised as essential for care experienced young people to support their wellbeing, mental health and integration into the family with which they live. Policy and practice guidance states that it should be integrated into care planning, carer training and practice. Many organisations have however found it difficult to effectively integrate Life Story Work into practice and support skill and confidence in its delivery. For many young people who have complex histories and information gaps regarding their family or history, LSDW provides structured support that can aid their understanding and support their emotional well-being. There is increased recognition that more Social Workers should receive specific training to support young people to navigate their lives and histories.
This course is CPD registered and includes 25 CPD credits.

What does the training include?
Life Story Direct Work Training
- What: A four day training programme on the core elements of Life Story Work and how to use the Life Story Coaching approach.
- Facilitators: Run by Laura Neal or Kim Matthews, Life Story Therapists and authors of the BJSW published What Is Life Story Work paper.
- Where: Held in person at one of our chosen venues- choose the best venue for you.
- When: There are four dates available in 2025. When you sign up you have a choice to select the date that suits you. The course runs from 9:30am - 4pm.
- Who Is The Training For: This course is suitable for social workers or social care practitioners. It has been used to train Life Story Teams within organisations to deliver life story direct work to all care experienced young people in need of the work. It is also suitable for other professionals such as teachers, residential staff, support workers others who have a key role in a young person's life. Please get in touch if you are not sure about your role.
- Why Attend: This course not only includes core information needed to understand the foundations of the approaches to Life Story Work, but teaches step-by-step a 10-session model for delivering Life Story Direct work, including real life examples, role play and practical resources, and when to seek additional support.
- Can Questions Be Asked: Yes, this course is an interactive course where the trainers take time to integrate views, opinions, your real life examples and answer specific questions.
- Certificate: In Life Story Direct Work, including 25 CPD credits.
What Does The Training Cover?
The four-day life story direct work course can be booked individually or as a group for up to 15 delegates. It walks delegates through a ten-session programme of direct work that includes core elements of effective life story work and can also be adapted to the young person’s needs and story. Over the four days, delegates will learn:
- How to deliver a full ten session direct work programme.
- How to deliver a range of difficult information in a child focused way.
- How to integrate play and paper-based activities.
- When a more intensive therapy approach is needed.
This four-day course includes an instruction book, assessment scales and resources that can be used following training completion. The course includes roleplay so all techniques can be practiced.
